What is the Gospel?
The Gospel is the Good News that God has saved sinners from the judgment they deserve through the perfect life, sacrificial death, and victorious resurrection of Jesus. Through Christ’s finished work, God will fix all that is wrong with the world for His glory and His people’s good.
The Gospel for You
God
God is the all-powerful Creator who is perfectly holy, just, and loving. He has always existed as one God in three persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). He is worthy of all worship and praise.
For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. - Romans 11:36
Man
Sin is anything that displeases God or conflicts with His nature. Ever since Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, we have been born with a sinful nature. We are not good people who occasionally sin. We are sinners. And because God is perfectly holy, just, and loving, our sin has earned us an eternity apart from God in a very real place of pain and torment called Hell.
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God - Romans 3:23
Christ
But God, because He is perfectly holy, just, and loving, was not content to leave Man in his sin. So he sent His Son, Jesus Christ, down to earth as a man. Still truly God, but now also truly man. He was born of a virgin, lived a perfect life without sin, died the death we deserved in our place on the cross, was buried, came back to life on the third day, defeating sin and death, and ascended into Heaven where He is now seated at the right hand of God, having finished the work of your salvation. He traded His perfect life for your sinful death.
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. - 2 Corinthians 5:21
Response
So how should you respond to this Good News? You should repent of your sin and turn to God, placing your faith, hope, and trust in Christ and His finished work. To repent is to turn away from your sin and toward Christ and His cross. To place your faith, hope, and trust in Christ's work is to believe He is who He says He is, He's done what He says He's done, and He's done this to bring Himself glory through saving you.
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. - Romans 10:9
The Gospel for the World
Creation
God created everything that exists, from atoms to galaxies. And when He made it, He called it good. All was as it should have been, and there was an order which reflected the goodness and glory of God. God is the main character in the story of the universe.
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. - Genesis 1:1
Fall
But man rebelled against God. Adam and Eve sinned, which ended the inherent goodness of themselves and all of creation along with them. The world as we know it is not as it should be. All sin, death, and pain in the world exists because we live in a fallen world which is aching to be made new.
And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. - Romans 8:23
Redemption
But God was not willing to leave His creation in a broken state. Even before He created, He knew He would redeem His creation. So when Christ accomplished His work of salvation for people, He also accomplished His work of redemption for creation. He is making all things new and putting back together all that is broken.
For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. - Colossians 1:19-20
New Creation
One day Christ will return and on that day He will bring with Him a new Heaven and a new Earth. All will be made new, and all will be a perfect and holy reflection of the God who is perfect and holy. The dead will be raised, the evil will be judged, and God will dwell with His people forever in the New Creation.
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. Revelation 21:1-2
